Hey folks! Please back up your iPhone to Apple’s iCloud. Last week, a MacMedics customer whose husband had just passed away, and somehow his iPhone went through the wash cycle in a washing machine, was referred to me for data recovery (there was water coming out of the iPhone, and I was unable to help).

The day before, a Ph.D. student who had lost three years of research, photos from fieldwork in Peru, and a book in progress were sent my way for help. This was because they had been to Apple with MacBook Pro that was under warranty with an embedded hard drive. Unfortunately, their logic board failed, and it was replaced under warranty, and poof, their data was lost! Also, they had switched around credit cards, and the card linked to their iCloud account had expired and had been more than six months, so there was no data there either.

On newer Macs where the hard drive/SSD is embedded into the logic board, it is extremely important to have a backup of your data in the event that something goes wrong with your logic board. For many years I have helped customers who had suffered some liquid spill or dead logic board by “removing” their hard drive and thus rescuing their data.

Please read the two blog posts below for more strategies for backing up your data:

P.S. I am now recommending that my customers have at least TWO backups for their Mac. 1. Time Machine 2. Backblaze.
