You need to take charge of your own data!
When discussing data preservation and protection, I often reference Ronald Reagan’s well-known phrase, “trust, but verify.” It’s essential to ensure that the data on your devices is really backed up. If you don’t have someone like me checking your computer regularly, it’s up to you to handle it. I suggest setting a reminder 3 to 4 times a year to confirm that the backup service you’re paying for or the backup you set up is functioning as you expect.
In this video, I share a story about a customer who relied on someone else’s assurance that their data was backed up. While it may have been synced with iCloud, I suspect it wasn’t truly backed up there. In trying to resolve a minor issue with Messages and Siri, they ended up erasing their phone, which led to data loss.
iCloud is a fantastic option for iPhone and iPad users looking to back up their devices, but it’s not foolproof. Therefore, it’s wise to have an additional backup method. You can connect your iPhone or iPad to a Mac or PC with iTunes to create a backup. Just keep in mind that these backups can consume a lot of storage, so it’s important to periodically review and delete any unnecessary ones.
